Trying to stay positive in a negative world
With everything happening in the world at the moment it is so hard to stay positive and upbeat!
I find it especially hard as I am effected by moods of others greatly being emphatic, add to that the fact I am Bi-polar and we are struggling to survive on half our normal wages, we have a fraction of our normal food budget money available, so after paying bills and rent, we are buying foods that are cheaper rather than healthy, I feel a storm brewing regarding my mental health!
I am trying to stay off social media as this is making my low mood even lower! but it's a bit of a catch 22 situation, the only interaction I have with the outside world is via social media, and currently social media is filled with negativity and harrowing reports and images that fill me with dread for humanity! It is hard to find a balance!
I know that many of you are struggling with the mental stress of this lockdown too! There are some little things you can do to help your state of mind during this time:
- Decrease your media exposure to the virus by only allowing yourself to read about covid and the world news once a day for up to 15 minutes on an official factual site
- If someone on your social media pages are putting up lots of conflicting theory links, negative comments, horrible images or negative stories that are upsetting or scaring you - put that person on a snooze for 30 days
- Take a break for several hours each day from social media and main stream media platforms. Go bake, make something, clean house, binge watch a series, watch a film, watch silly videos on you-tube, take a walk, do some gardening - do anything that will take you away from the constant reminder of the virus and the current state of the world.
- Get yourself into a daily routine, get up at the same time, eat at the same times, go to bed at the same time, set yourself a schedule of activities - Eating healthy, exercising and sleeping regular hours will help your mental state.
- Stay in contact with family and friends via telephone, skype, messenger, zoom etc - Isolation physically does not mean cutting yourself off from contact with others totally!
- If you feel you need to talk about your mental health reach out - talk to a trusted friend or family member and if you feel you can not do that contact a professional body - there are many offering help at this time for free .......
NB: I am not a medical professional in any way but I have first hand experience of mental illness
